Tai Tapu

Standing on the steep, bush clad slope with the client in mid winter we could see some of the challenges, and enormous potential that the site offered.

The hill opposite cast much of the valley into shade in the depths of winter. The site was steep, but the views are breathtaking. A secret valley tucked into the hills above Tai Tapu, it was a unique site for a client with an equally unique vision.

Built from Fraemohs solid timber and ICF block the building was crouched into the hillside, with a large living area that runs east to west – with colossal glazed windows at each end. A daybed cantilevers out into the sun. Exposed steel and solid logs create a strong, and masculine space, that is softened by a wonderful organic fireplace and the sympathetic use of color and fabrics. The main living area a vaulted Viking hall. The Master bedroom a private tree house, up amongst the treeline.

This building is a career highlight for the designer Jared Lane, but also speaks volumes for how working in partnership with a client with a strong vision can help build something truly unique.
